Modeling the tech behaviors we want to teach!

Your OneStep

✓ Model the tech habit you want your kid to learn!

The number one way to start teaching healthy tech use is by modeling it ourselves. When we limit our own screen use around our child(ren) - no matter what age they are - we're teaching (and showing) them that connection comes first.

Why is modeling so effective?

For our kids, we are their blueprint for how to navigate the world. They’re constantly observing our behavior and picking up on our habits—even the ones we don’t realize we're demonstrating. If our children see us reaching for our phone during meals, scrolling while they’re talking to us, or mindlessly using screens as a default, they’re learning that is “normal." On the flip side, when they see us prioritizing eye contact, engaging in play and our surroundings, or setting our phones aside during family time, they internalize those habits instead. Check out this page on our website for more on modeling tech behavior!

Ways to model tech habits...

Be mindful of our own screen use.
Limit tech time when our children are present—especially during meals, playtime, or bedtime routines.

Narrate our choices.
If we need to use our phone, explain it: “I’m checking the weather for your soccer practice,” or “I’m setting a timer for our game.” This teaches kids that tech is a tool, not a distraction.

Create tech-free zones and times.
For example, keep daily carpool screen-free or establish playdates as screen-free.

Show the value of unplugged time.
Let our kids see us reading, playing, or spending time outdoors without a screen in sight. One of our clients shared "When I walk out the door on the weekend, I consider whether I really need to bring my smartphone with me. I often leave it at home which allows me to be more present with my child, my partner or myself."

Up for a challenge?

Can you designate 1-2 hrs every evening (from dinner time to kids' bed time) as dedicated device-free family time? Even if people are doing their own thing - just not on screens. You might notice that the amount of conversation and engagement increases dramatically! And your bedtime routine might go more smoothly too!
